And trying to research effective strength exercises that don’t involve potentially dropping weights on your foot? #stressfest

You see how yoga can help calm the body and mind, but how are you supposed to remember those pose names that all sound the same? Do you have to buy into some philosophy to benefit? What if the other yogis don’t accept you? (Um, actually, maybe don’t call me a yogi…)

And let’s not forget about everything you have to schedule it around: Work, family, friends, cooking (healthy) meals, laundry that never ends, cleaning up after the dog, Netflix binges…

Isn’t starting a yoga practice supposed to relieve stress, not create it?

When the corporate yoga studio became popular in the early 2000’s, we were told to choose between traditional exercise and yoga. We’ve been led to believe that to be “good” at yoga, you’ve got to be bendy and Zen (whatever that really means). That chanting and singing bowls are part of the package. 

But that’s not true at all.

We see you, the fun loving woman already living your best life.

Your weekends are best spent playing with your dog and human family – blood or chosen. When you’re in a jam, Martha’s got a tutorial for it. When you need to restore your faith in humanity,  Ellen’s YouTube channel is your go-to. 

Who needs a corporate yoga guru at a silent retreat to tell you that you’ve achieved enlightenment?

So like, why yoga AND fitness?

Practicing yoga without fitness (or vice versa) is as helpful as buying a car for the heated seats without testing if it’ll handle in the snow.

Both are abso-freaking-lutely essential to cruising the road to good health, not to mention ENJOYING THE RIDE.

Fitness without yoga is like driving a car and never changing the oil.

Regular fitness (like cardio and interval training) grinds on your muscles to help them grow. Without yoga to stretch, lengthen and  tone those growing muscles, you can cause major wear and tear on your joints and reduce your range of motion. (READ: That increases risk of injury)

Yoga without strength training is like driving a car with loose brake wires.

A yoga-only practice can cause overuse injuries and even hypermobility, where your muscles become too loose to hold your bones in place. Ouch! You’ve got to build your muscles as you lengthen them so they can support your spine and the rest of your bones.
